Frequently Asked Questions

CPA License FAQs

Where can I find the rules for properly using the CPA title?

You can find these rules on the Washington State Board of Accountancy website.

What is the difference between the WSCPA and the Washington State Board of Accountancy (WBOA)?

The Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants is a membership association and does not oversee the licensing of CPAs, nor manage CPA license information. Licensure is a function of the WBOA.

I have recently moved. How much time do I have to give WBOA my new address?

WBOA rules require you to report any address change within 30 days. Change your address online here (use the same login information you use to renew your license). Don't forget to update your phone number and email address.

How can I convert my CPA–Inactive Certificate to a CPA License?

The WBOA requirements of licensure are available here.

How can I verify whether someone is a CPA?

For CPAs in Washington State, visit the Board of Accountancy Washington State website. For CPAs in other states, visit CPAverify, a free, national database of licensed CPAs.

Education / CPE FAQs

When and how can I buy a Season Ticket?

Season Tickets can be purchased year round. However, they are valid for classes on or after the June 1 of the year in which they are purchased through May 31 of the following year. For example, if you bought a Season Ticket in November, it would be good until May 31. You can purchase one when you renew your membership, or by going to the Value Programs tab of our event catalog.

Why didn't I receive a notice of a date/location change for a CPE class?

When a WSCPA CPE program or event location changes, we notify registrants by email and by telephone. Please make sure that the WSCPA has your correct email address and telephone number by updating your profile.

I can no longer attend a class. Can someone take my place?

Substitutions may be requested in writing or via phone. Send an email to our CPE team. In your email, please include the course title, course date, the person who can no longer attend, and the person who will attend instead. Courses purchased with a Season Ticket, as well as Prix Fixe and Member Exclusive webinars, are not eligible for substitutions of this kind.

Where are the printed course materials?

The WSCPA provides digital copies of all CPE course materials. You can download available e-materials from your Upcoming CPE & Events page. Additionally, at in-person events, the WSCPA will provide outlets for charging electronic devices in close proximity to every seat so you can be sure you won't run out of power.

Membership FAQs

How do I get more involved with the WSCPA as a new member?

Can I view and print my membership invoice?

You can download and view your membership invoice in your MyWSCPA account under Dues. If your firm pays for your membership, your invoice will not be available online. Contact us for more information.

How can I pay my dues online?

Please view the How to Pay WSCPA Dues video above.

How can I cancel my membership auto-renewal?

Log in to your MyWSCPA profile and visit the Dues page. Active auto-renew subscriptions will appear in a large yellow box at the top of the page. Click the "cancel automatic payments" button to discontinue your automatic payment.

How much of my dues can I use as a tax write-off?

Payment of membership dues is deductible for most members of a trade association under Section 162 of the Internal Revenue Code as an ordinary and necessary business expense. However, WSCPA estimates that 7.81% percent of the dues payment is not deductible as a business expense because of WSCPA lobbying activities on behalf of its members. Contributions to CPAPAC are not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes. Donations to Washington CPA Foundation are deductible as a charitable contribution.

Can I still remain a member of the WSCPA if I am "CPA Retired" or "CPA Inactive"?

Yes, you can remain a member of the WSCPA if you hold a "CPA Retired" or "CPA Inactive" status with the WBOA.

Are WSCPA members required to adhere to a code of conduct?

Yes, as referenced in the Bylaws, WSCPA members agree to comply with the Code of Professional Conduct of the AICPA.

Where is the member directory?

The member directory is now a part of WSCPA Connect, our private, online community for members only. Here are directions to access Connect and the "Find Members" feature:

  • Go to WSCPA Connect and login
  • From Connect, go to the menu on the left side of the page.
  • Under "Search" select "Find Members". Here you can search for members.
  • To contact a member directly, click their name from the search results list and then click the "Message" button. This will send a private message to the individual. The individual will also receive an email notification from WSCPA Connect with the content of your message. When someone replies to your message, you will receive an email notification with the content of the reply and you can respond directly from that email to the individual, or you can go back to WSCPA Connect and view your messages under "My Account" > "My Messages".
